Upper Polished Bore Receptacle (PBR)
An Upper Polished Bore Receptacle (PBR) is a precision-machined completion component installed in the upper section of a tubing string to provide a smooth, polished sealing bore for seal assemblies. It accommodates tubing movement caused by temperature changes, pressure fluctuations, and mechanical loads while maintaining a reliable pressure-tight seal. Upper PBRs are widely used in production, injection, intelligent well, and packer completion systems.
Manufactured from high-strength alloy steel or corrosion-resistant alloys, Upper Polished Bore Receptacles are designed for demanding onshore, offshore, deepwater, and High-Pressure High-Temperature (HPHT) well environments.
Applications
Oil and gas production wells
Injection wells
Offshore drilling and completion
Onshore production operations
Deepwater completions
Horizontal wells
Directional wells
Intelligent well systems
High-Pressure High-Temperature (HPHT) wells
Dual completion systems
Gravel pack completions
Sand control systems

Working Principle
The Upper Polished Bore Receptacle is installed above the production packer within the tubing string.
During operation:
The PBR provides a polished sealing surface.
Seal assemblies or seal units are inserted into the polished bore.
As the tubing expands or contracts due to pressure and temperature changes, the seal assembly moves smoothly inside the polished bore.
The polished surface maintains a pressure-tight seal while allowing controlled axial movement.
This prevents excessive stress on the tubing string and completion equipment while maintaining well integrity.
Advantages
Accommodates thermal expansion and tubing movement
Maintains pressure integrity
Reduces stress on tubing and packers
Improves completion reliability
Minimises seal wear
Suitable for high-pressure environments
Long service life
Easy integration with completion systems
Excellent resistance to corrosion and erosion
Low maintenance requirements
